Although to the uninitiated, links is synonymous with golf, in fact a links is a specific kind of golf course. It’s located close to the sea, on dune-like terrain over sandy, infertile soil; this results in fast-running fairways, but the ever-changing maritime winds make playing the course the ultimate challenge in golf. After an entire chapter devoted to their #1 links – the Old Course at St., Andrews (birthplace of the game) George Peper and Malcolm Campbell examine the 50 next best links, all located in the British Isles, in detail. Later chapters cover links in other parts of the World (their list has 5 courses in North America) and the newest links, built in the last 25 years as part of the environmentally sensitive minimalist movement. Most of the courses are captured in their glory by esteemed golf photographer Iain Lowe.

Crusade Started Excellent book and superb photography that has started a crusade to play as many ‘True Links’ courses as possible – just 200 to go! However, the only quibble would be it’s a shame each and every course wasn’t reviewed and reported upon. Plus the maps whilst a tad vague are also inaccurate in a couple on instances. What do we do if we find another ‘links’ course worthy of the list – probably play it and just enjoy the memory?

The true book about the links Wonderful book. What makes this book exceptional that it also gives masses of information about the character of links golf. Even an entire chapter on what makes the turf so special. It is really the definitive book about limks golf. Although… They left out Dunstanborough Castle Golf Course. A true links by any means created by James Braid. Perhaps the next edition?
